Cabinet Refinishing

Customer Checklist: Cabinet Refinishing in Parker, CO

A practical guide to cabinet refinishing for Parker, CO: what to document before requesting help.

Cabinet refinishing transforms a kitchen or bathroom without the cost and disruption of a full remodel, but the project scope varies widely depending on the condition and material of your existing cabinets. Gathering the following details before you request an estimate ensures you get an accurate quote and a clear picture of what the project involves.

Count your cabinet doors, drawer fronts, and cabinet boxes. Walk through the kitchen or bathroom and tally every piece that will be refinished — upper doors, lower doors, drawer fronts, end panels, and any trim or crown molding that is part of the cabinet set. Note whether the doors are flat-panel, raised-panel, shaker, or another style. This count is the primary driver of the estimate because each piece is individually prepped and coated.

Identify the cabinet material. Solid wood (oak, maple, cherry, birch) is the best candidate for refinishing. MDF (medium-density fiberboard) doors can also be refinished but require different prep than solid wood. Thermofoil (vinyl-wrapped) doors can sometimes be painted if the vinyl is in good condition, but peeling thermofoil generally needs to be removed or the doors replaced. Laminate cabinets require specialty primers for paint adhesion. If you are unsure of the material, take a photo of the door edge and the inside of a cabinet box — a refinisher can usually identify the material from those images.

Document the current finish condition. Photograph several cabinet doors showing the overall appearance, plus close-ups of any chipping, peeling, yellowing, water damage, or wear around hardware. Note which areas are in the worst condition — typically doors near the stove, dishwasher, and sink take the most abuse. If doors are warped, cracked, or have delaminating edges, photograph those specifically, as they may need replacement rather than refinishing.

Decide on your color and finish preferences. Do you want to keep the current color, go lighter, go darker, or switch from stain to paint (or vice versa)? If you have a specific color in mind, provide the paint brand and color code. If you are undecided, research reference images of kitchens with a similar layout to yours — this gives the refinisher a clear target. Note whether you prefer a matte, satin, or semi-gloss sheen. Semi-gloss is most common for cabinets because it is easy to clean, but satin provides a softer contemporary look.

Note whether you want hardware changed. If you are planning to install new pulls, knobs, or hinges, deciding before the refinishing starts ensures the old holes can be filled and new holes drilled in the right locations. Switching from knobs to pulls (or vice versa) changes the hole pattern, and addressing this during refinishing makes the transition seamless. If you are keeping existing hardware, note whether it will be refinished, replaced, or reinstalled as-is.

Plan for the disruption period. Cabinet refinishing requires removing all doors and drawer fronts, which means your kitchen will be functional but doorless for several days. Consider which items in upper cabinets should be relocated and whether you need access to specific cooking equipment or supplies during the project. Countertops, sinks, and appliances stay in place — the disruption is limited to the cabinet surfaces being worked on.
